U.S. VeteranFuneral services for Robert Alvis Poteat, 66, of New Llano, Louisiana will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012, at East Leesville Baptist Church with Rev. Les Comeaux and Rev. Chris Welch officiating. Burial will follow in the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 4th, at New Llano First Baptist Church.

On March, 30, 2012, God called Brother Robert Alvis Poteat home. Robert was born to the late Robert and Maggie Bell Watts Poteat on June 30, 1945, in Durham, North Carolina. He attended Central High School in Hillsborough, NC. He joined the U.S. Army December 1, 1970 and later left his home of North Carolina. While in San Antonio, Texas, he met the love of his life Linda Anderson. They were married on May 4, 1974 in El Paso, Texas. The Army opened many opportunities to allow him to travel the world. SSG Poteat retired from the Army in 1992. He then went on to work for Angola State Penitentiary and later transferred to Phelps Correctional Center where he retired as MSG Poteat in 2011. He was an active member at New Llano Baptist Church for 27 years where he served as a Deacon. God called him to the ministry and on April 26, 2009 he was ordained by Brother Les Comeaux. His hobbies included traveling, watching his grandkids play sports, fishing, spending time with this family and reading his Bible.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife of 37 years, Linda Anderson Poteat, son Darryl Poteat and daughters, Sherry Poteat, Belinda (Antonio) Poteat, Cindy Poteat all of Hillsborough, NC, Donita Poteat and Lesley Poteat (Andre) of New Llano, brother: Spencer L. (Wilma) Poteat, sister: Lela Poteat (Fred) Dantzler, 9 grandchildren: Frederick (Char-Norie), Dominic ( Lauren), Tamika, Erica, Rahkeem, Danika, Destiny, Keyana, and DeAndre; 2 great grandchildren: DeAndre and Lailah. 3 Aunts: Nora F. Poteat, Sarah Battle and Vera Watts; 3 nieces, 4 nephews, and a host of many other friends and family.

Robert had an extended family of close friends. His “adopted” daughter Pamela Smith, sisters: Sandra Babineaux, Charlotte Cooper, Beverly Adanandus, Sunday Jackson, Pat Guest; brothers: Charles Babineaux, Leo Dansby, Robert Brooks, Dream Caston, James Crane, Hillary Guest and William Wilks.
